Tired of the American Dream? Lifestyle Design is for you

What is the American Dream? It’s this idea that if you work hard and put the time in good things will come. For most people it looks something like this.

  • Go to college and get a degree
  • Get a job
  • Work 35-40 hours a week while impressing your boss to earn a promotion
  • Earn the promotion, buy a house
  • Spend your free time enjoying the weekends and that two weeks’ vacation
  • Retire at 65 and enjoy your golden years

This idea really worked well back in the day when countries were being torn apart by war. Think of the stories you have heard or seen where someone’s ancestors fled their country with nothing but the clothes on their back, got on a boat came to “America the Land of Opportunity” put their nose to the grind, worked hard and made a respectable living for their family.

Somewhere along the line that idea of the American Dream became almost impossible to achieve. Today that dream looks something like this:

  • Go to a college you can’t afford, earn a degree you can’t use
  • Get a job you hate
  • Work 40-60 hours a week out of stress and fear of being fired
  • Buy an overpriced house that needs work (if you can even afford a house)
  • Spend your “free time” on the weekends fixing up that house
  • Never getting the time off for a vacation and having those vacation days slip away
  • Retire at 70 too worn out and tired to have any sort of adventures

This “dream” was created by big corporations to instil this mindset into people that you need to be working. Working hard so you can earn a better life for yourself and your family, when in reality the only people who benefit from this are the CEO’s at the top.

There are 630 billionaires in the United States today. Many of whom made their fortune on the backs of hard working Americans just like you.

To me that just seems unfair, and you know what that’s life. Life isn’t fair. As cliché as it is, you only get one life so you might as well enjoy it while you can and not waste it way in some office working all the time.

If you are tired of this American Dream lifestyle that isn’t working for you, might I suggest Lifestyle Design.

Lifestyle Design is exactly what it says. You design your lifestyle as you want. Do what you want to; don’t let some corporation or society tell you what to do or how to live your life.

This isn’t a new concept by any means; it’s been around ever since the American Dream lifestyle became the norm. It started to come into the mainstream after Tim Ferris’ 2007 book “The 4-Hour work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere and Join the New Rich

This is how Tim Ferris describes Lifestyle Design:

“The New Rich (NR) are those who abandon the deferred-life plan and create luxury lifestyles in the present using the currency of the New Rich: time and mobility. This is an art and a science we will refer to as Lifestyle Design (LD).”

Tim goes on in the book to discuss how people don’t want to be millionaires; they just want the freedom that one million dollars provides. Things like skiing the Alps, butlers, exotic foods, relaxing by the ocean.

For me that lifestyle includes things like golfing during the week, having a suite at a matinée sporting event, or even something as simple as staying up to watch a West coast game on TV.

For you that might not be the case at all, but that’s the beauty of Lifestyle Design. No one can tell you how to live your life. You don’t have to follow one set of guidelines or be influenced by anything. For you, maybe that millionaire freedom is going on a big trip(s), or never working an office 9-5 job again, or pursuing your hobby more, or even something as simple as spending more time with your family. There is no limit on how you can live and enjoy your life.

The benefits to this lifestyle are endless but here are a couple of the big ones.

1. Improve yourself

Less time in the office means less time learning irrelevant skills and more time to focus on you. Have you ever said to yourself, I want to start exercising more, and be healthier, but with work you just never seem to have the time or energy? Lifestyle Design gives you the time to do that. It gives you the chance to learn a skill you never had time for, learning a language or even furthering your computer skills.

2. Control Your Income

The problem with working that 9-5 job is that your income is always at the mercy of the business. They can cut how many hours you work, they can control how much you get paid, when you can take vacation and on and on. Worst, you can be laid off without warning at any moment. If you’re lucky maybe you’ll get a nice severance package but more often than not your left scrambling to find another job in corporate America to start this cycle all over again.

Lifestyle Design lets you break away from the traditional workforce and have more control over your income.

3. Happiness

After improving yourself and having your finances under control. You are going to feel so much happier. Think about how much stress will be off your shoulders not having to worry about when the next paycheque is coming or if you are going to be part of the budget cuts. As you start improving yourself and learning some new skills you will become more accomplished and start feeling better about yourself and therefore much happier.
